A thriving democracy requires that every eligible citizen has free, fair, and unhindered access to the ballot box. Across the nation, coordinated voter suppression tactics threaten the integrity of our elections with discriminatory voter ID laws, polling place closures, targeted voter roll purges, and partisan gerrymandering. These attacks directly target working-class, student, and minority voters.
People Demanding Action is taking direct non-violent action to defend the franchise and rebuild a truly representative democracy. We demand a modern electoral system built on access, transparency, and equal representation.
Restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act by requiring federal pre-clearance for changes to voting laws in jurisdictions with a history of voter discrimination, and enact comprehensive protections through the Freedom to Vote Act.
Mandate automatic voter registration (AVR) for all eligible citizens through state agencies (such as the DMV) and establish nationwide same-day voter registration for all primary and general elections.
Ban felony disenfranchisement laws nationwide, automatically restoring the right to vote for all citizens upon completion of their sentence or release.
Require all states to use non-partisan, independent redistricting commissions to draw federal and state legislative districts, eliminating unfair map-manipulation designed to protect incumbent politicians.
Make Election Day a national federal holiday, mandate a minimum of 14 days of early voting (including Saturday and Sunday voting) in all states, guarantee universal no-excuse mail-in voting, and require adequate polling places and ballot drop boxes per capita.
